This time independents have trumpeted their victory in the three-tier panchayat elections held in Uttarakhand. On one side, independents seemed to have an upper hand against the ruling party BJP and on the other side the opposition party Congress. Both the parties are also scared by this victory of independents. If we talk about the winners of the posts of district panchayat members, then the largest number of independent candidates emerged here.
Independents capture 145 seats
The counting of votes which started on Thursday concluded on Friday afternoon. Out of 358 seats of district panchayat members in the state, independents captured 145, while BJP-supported candidates won 121 seats and Congress-supported candidates won 92 seats.
Voting was held in two phases for 11,082 posts
This time the State Election Commission had issued notification for elections for a total of 66,418 posts including 7,499 posts of Pradhan, 2,974 posts of member area panchayat, 358 posts of member district panchayat and 55,587 posts of member gram panchayat. Out of these, 22,429 candidates were elected unopposed. 32,907 posts remained vacant. Voting was held in two phases for 11,082 posts. In comparison to these, 32,580 were in the fray.
