Voters showed great enthusiasm in the first phase of the three-tier panchayat elections in Uttarakhand. About 68 percent of the people exercised their franchise in the polling held in 49 development blocks of the state. Long queues of voters remained at many polling stations till night. The special thing was that women voted more than men and strongly registered their participation in democracy.
Polling was done peacefully
Voting started peacefully at 8 am on Thursday. Voting was slow in the initial hours, but as the day progressed, voters started reaching the booths in large numbers. The percentage of voting increased rapidly after noon and by evening this figure crossed 70 percent in many districts.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and many ministers, MLAs and administrative officials also participated in the democratic process by voting in their respective villages. State Election Commissioner Sushil Kumar described the first phase as “extremely successful and peaceful”. He said that there was excellent coordination between polling personnel, security forces and other departments in the election process. In this phase, the fate of a total of 17,829 candidates is sealed in the ballot boxes.

Preparation for the second phase
The State Election Commission will now conduct the second phase of voting on July 28. This phase will include 40 development blocks of 12 districts of the state.
