On the occasion of Hul Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to the heroes of the Santhal rebellion. The Prime Minister said that the bravery and sacrifice of revolutionaries like Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav ​​and Phoolo-Jhano is an immortal saga of struggle against colonial power, which will continue to inspire generations to come.

Prime Minister Modi wrote on Twitter, “Hul Diwas reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of our tribal society. I salute all those brave martyrs including Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav ​​and Phoolo-Jhano, who sacrificed their all in the defense of the motherland. Their sagas will always inspire the country.”

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also paid tribute on this historic day and said, “This movement fought under the leadership of Sido and Kanhu became an example of unity against injustice in the Indian freedom struggle. Thousands of tribal brothers and sisters sacrificed their lives, whose sacrifice will always be remembered.”

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan wrote, “On the occasion of Hul Diwas, I pay my respects to the immortal martyrs of the Santhal rebellion. The glorious story of those who raised the slogan of ‘Angrez Hamari Maati Chhodo’ and started the rebellion will continue to inspire generations.”

Hul Diwas, celebrated every year on 30 June, is celebrated in memory of the Santhal rebellion of 1855. This tribal movement, started under the leadership of Sido and Kanhu Murmu in the Santhal Paragana region of Jharkhand, raised its voice against the exploitation of British rule, landlords and moneylenders. It is considered an important and courageous chapter of India’s freedom struggle.
